you may not have heard the name jackson almond before, but you will have likely heard some of his music. having released on wotnot back in 2013 under the name real, with a flurry of eps, remixes and bootlegs under this name and as part of duo boean (on bbe, warner, xvi & slowfoot among others), jackson has been delighting ears for a while now, with a particular knack for balancing hooks and earworms with original ideas and creative production. this ep began life as a series of headphone jams written when jackson was living outside of the city in self-imposed exile, tuning into the goings on in dance music from an external position. it was then polished into dancefloor gems at the wotnot studio at the total refreshment centre. the music reflects this, with the sonic palette reflecting lo-fi and outsider house, but with a warmth, depth and musicality specific to his own personal situation.

when michaela meise performed at westgermany at kottbusser tor in berlin-kreuzberg on march 20, 2015, accompanying herself on the accordion, i was perplexed. i knew her first album from 2010, which was about hymns (»preis dem todesüberwinder«, originally released on clouds hill, available as a download and stream through my label from july 2018 on), but what she was playing weren�t spiritual songs?! i wanted to put this music out on my label: the songs sounded sad, aloof and wistful but also proud, determined and unerring. the album title »i am greek« is a tribute to melina mercouri�s album »je suis grecque!«, which was released in 1971 when mercouri was deprived of citizenship by the greek military junta. mercouri lived � like mikis theodorakis and many other cultural workers � in exile. meise�s album is dedicated to the chanson scene of post-war europe, whose songs were popularly folksy, but also political. some talk about the experience of war, the shoah and labor migration.

proper mixed bag this one soothing, grinding, banging, and disturbing! new york city by way of miami, alex suarez delivers his debut lp the eight track autogolpe for l.i.e.s. autogolpe, is a term for military coup initiated by a dictator to take control of an existing government and suarez uses this loose idea to create the sonic equivialent of the pain, strife, oppression, isolation, and joyous freedom associated with said act. musically he expands on his prior releases for bank and primitive languages as heavy industrialized sonic beatings sit next to somber passages, oil drum slow beat tribal clangers provide a back drop for screams shooting out of the dark. musically it paints a distorted picture of world in decline, an exile from another land and arrivial to anothers in chaos or the clinging hope of something better on the other side.

after 25 years of silence, the ethiopian legend girma bèyènè is back alongside one of the best ethio groups akalé wubé. comes in a double lp gatefold 180g vinyl! girma bèyènè is a true legend when it comes to ethiopian music. after an exile to the united states and a radio silence that lasted 25 years, he jubilantly accepted the invitation from the french group akalé wubé to return to the spotlight and perform once more. the comeback took place last september during a memorable concert alongside akalé wubé at the studio de l�ermitage (paris 20). french medias like tracks (arte), le monde, libération relayed this major event, which aroused many strong emotions amongst fans of ethiopian music. the adventure could not stop just yet.

rekids regular markus suckut returns to radio slave�s renowned imprint with a solid techno two-tracker this november. recent years has seen markus suckut�s distinguished career enter its next phase, whether playing a role in the relaunch of steve o�sullivan�s mosaic imprint, debuting on rekids, or pioneering his own imprints exile (alongside johannes heil) and sckt. in his next outing on rekids the german dj and producer demonstrates functional techno from the off, initiating with the cavernous and uncompromising �10 y� which forges a swelling tension using echoing stabs and rolling kicks. on the flip, the groveled �zero nine six� meanders forward with subtle bass tones as mesmerising synth throbs gradually ebb into the mix.

summer is in the air, celebrating in vivid colour and creating everything a new. it therefore seems the perfect time for black hot records to emerge into the light with a pair of cracking disco re-works. the man behind the mixing desk is however no novice, having served up his first instalment of dance floor dynamite way back in 1991, and there followed a decade of underground signals under various guises, before a self-imposed exile and prolonged radio silence ensued�

und, mor elian is a relatively new name on the block, but her deft tastes have seen her share the stage with the likes of kerri chandler, mike dunn, seven davis jnr, dj qu and many more, and most recently, releasing her debut vinyl release on the excellent prime numbers label, featuring fxhes ob ignitt on remix duties. on drum vortex, mor strikes a killer release for hypercolour, enlisting two big remixes on the release from joey anderson and markus suckut. on her original mix, drum vortex rolls out a ricocheting drum workout that indeed goes through the vortex, otherworldly voices and cosmic drones sit in the middle of the mix whilst the rides and hats intensify. joey anderson has proven himself as one of the most diverse house producers out there, with offerings for dekmantel, syncrophone recordings and tanstaafl planets. joey remodels drum vortex into an old style warehouse dub, rolling congas and snares with incessant synth stabs and bending strings, making up for one serious remix from mr. anderson. another interpretation is on offer from markus suckut, whose techno prowess has shone for labels like rekids, be as one, mosaic and his own exile label (run with johannes heil)

all good things take time, aussteiger said once. and indeed, it took a serious amount of time to get everything set for what soon will be known as dub disco s first release! we�ve been digging deep inside his tune collection. not only to make sure that the first three-tracker is a belter, but that it also showcases exactly the kind of musical approach we wanted as our personal imprint: to hell with a boring and homogeneous release that only represents one genre! we were looking for something that stands for itself, something that tells a story, something that is representative for what the artist stands for in a musical sense. and after a tedious quest, we carefully curated something we think is dope! kicking off the number one is a track disclosing the joint forces of berlin-based collective of musicians los wawis and aussteiger s capabilities as a remixer. here appears a psychedelic version of the track, which is carried by gentle guitars, a dubby bassline as well as the funky-trippy synthesizers that usher a tropical vibe onto the dancefloors. the starter on the flip is entitled �heimat� and comes around as a melancholic interpretation of aussteiger�s time in exile, a period that enabled him to craft his very own style. there is not much to say about this bomb that the ear doesn t catch instantly: this one is an honest earworm, with it s irresistibly arranged horns and a pervasive and driving bassline. to finish everything off, we went for a nasty banger, that carefully blends different aspects of the raving side of dance music. the electrifying broken beat and it�s haunting bassline are blended with an intense influence of acid.

hot off his collaboration with madlib and med (bad neighbor), socal ambassador blu has teamed up with the paris-based production team union to present �la counting�, the lead single off their forthcoming album cheetah in the city. featuring remixes by exile, dibiase, and yann kesz, this limited edition 10� delivers blu�s lyrical love letter to los angeles while union�s synth-soaked production marks a stylistic sea change for the below the heavens mc. rippling with 808s and cinematic strings, la counting is an organic evolution from the signature keyboard-driven sound that put union on the map in 2012 with analogtronics, their debut album featuring talib kweli, mf doom, elzhi, guilty simpson, and more. cheetah in the city will be released later this year on fat beats records, but until then the world will have to keep la counting.

decisions is proud to announce its second release: empty gallery ep by waterhouse, a melbourne based producer, dj and vocalist. the ep spans 3 years of waterhouse productions (2013-2015), charting a sonic emergence suffused with spatial, textural and emotional complexity. the ep opens with �breathless�, a heady rush of ambience, shimmering cymbals and field recorded textures. �a little sheep� follows, progressively immersing the listener in accumulating layers of vocal melodies. on �3415� rapturous choral textures encircle delayed claps and a reverb-drenched kick drum to form the most urgently rhythmic cut on the record. side a ends with title track �empty gallery�, in which an intricate constellation of strings, pads, rumbling sub frequencies and brusquely dry percussion meet lyrics confronting life after loss.

for over 12 months thomas feriero aka avatism, our friend and label partner, has been staying at home and working on his album. he moved to berlin to work on it and now sadly (for us) yet (gladly) for him he is moving back to milan. poof! just like that. so what did this year entail exactly? well for some of us not much. we got to see him in his studio comfy pants a couple of times (he wears slippers) we heard his studio woes, ate pasta with him, drank beers and of course got to hear his album at every juncture. while this self-imposed exile may have been a little worrisome the result is fortunately spectacular. adamant is a glimpse into how a city shapes a life and how intrinsically life then shapes music.
